UX Y’all is a UX conference hosted anually in Raleigh hosted by Triangle UXPA, where speakers and members of the UX community come together to exchange ideas and network with new people.
During Summer 2024, I had the opportunity to volunteer with UX Y’all’s design team. The overall goal of our team this summer was to create a cohesive & engaging visual identity that would resonate with the annual theme & conference attendees. We aimed to ensure that all materials, from social media posts to physical wayfinding signs, reflected the conference's values of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity.
"Our 2024 theme...
Blueprints of User Experience. Whether you’re building a website, a cabin, or a castle, you need a blueprint. Tell us about the blueprints that you use in your work--your design patterns, your frameworks, your maps to success, and even your failures. Explain how your work has evolved in an ever-changing UX landscape.”
1. SOCIAL GRAPHICS
To bring the conference’s energy online, I designed a series of social graphics that captured the “blueprint” theme and invited the community to connect even before stepping through the doors.
2. ABOUT PAGE REDESIGN
To align the conference story with its refreshed visual identity, I redesigned the ‘About’ page to reflect the theme and style guide while making the content feel more engaging and approachable.
3. REFLECTION & CHALLENGES
Adapting as a team and learning
My time at working with UX Y’all really helped me explore my creativity, and gave me a newfound love for different types of design that I hope to explore more in the future. This was my first time designing for social media, and there were hurdles that I had to overcome by working on my creativity skills.
One challenge we faced was the lack of ready-made graphics to support our designs. In past years, an artist would create illustrations tied to the conference theme, but this time we had to adapt and generate our own. This pushed me to be flexible and resourceful. I developed a graphic based on the traced outline of the conference venue, which introduced a clean ‘blueprint’ aesthetic that tied back to the event’s focus on building connections and ideas, and was used throughout different social media graphics.
Another hurdle was designing across multiple aspect ratios and formats, from square social posts to wide digital banners. Each layout required rethinking spacing, hierarchy, and balance so the designs remained visually cohesive no matter the platform. To ensure consistency but also optimize for clarity & impact, I had to be detail-oriented and systematic.
Overall, I really appreciated this opportunity and felt like I grew my creativity and learned to be flexible. I’m happy I got to try different types of digital design that I hope to explore more in the future.
